Crosswind & Headwind Calculator

Enter the runway heading and the wind to see the headwind (or tailwind) and crosswind component for takeoff and landing.

Formula

Headwind = wind speed × cos(θ). Crosswind = wind speed × sin(θ), where θ is the angle between wind direction and runway heading. A negative headwind value is a tailwind.

FAQ

How do I calculate crosswind?

Multiply the wind speed by the sine of the angle between the wind direction and the runway heading. A 20 kt wind at 30° off the runway gives about 10 kt of crosswind.
